Public sector employment continues to grow along with the various Government stimulus plans. At the national level, jobs grew
at 3.0% p.a. for the year ended August 2010. Full time positions are growing in this sector with jobs growing at 1.5 %. Part time
positions are also growing strongly, at more than 10%. Despite this growth in part time positions, part time employment in the
Government Sector is below average. Currently, 16.5% of positions are part time, compared with 29.8% across all sectors.
Job vacancies in this sector are growing. This is a sign of not only Government programs expanding but also the movement of
public employees to the now more robust private sector. In fact, job vacancies in May 2010 are higher than they were prior to
At the state level, NSW has been reducing numbers as it tightens its belt. In SA, Queensland and Victoria, government stimulus
programs are boosting numbers. WA also made cutbacks but as the economy in that state is growing strongly, a return to
growth can be expected.
The outlook for this sector is for modest growth, with specialised areas increasingly fnding it diffcult to attract highly skilled
personnel as they have to compete with the private sector in terms of wages and conditions.
