Trades & Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships and traineeships are a great way to
earn while you learn and secure yourself a great future.
JULIET ELIZABETH reports.
Earn while you learn
These days, more women are undertaking apprenticeships in the trades.
If you are in the position of not
wanting full time study or full time
employment, consider an
apprenticeship or a traineeship.
Apprenticeships and traineeships involve
a mix of on-the-job training and studying
at TAFE, making them a good option for
those who like hands-on learning but
want to continue studying after school.
Things to consider
Industries and occupations: When
people think of apprenticeships, the
majority think of traditional trades such
as building, plumbing and electrical.
But there are in fact approximately
2500 different apprenticeship and
traineeship occupations. Check out
information on occupations, pathways
and career options.
Pre-apprenticeships: TAFEs offer what
are known as pre-apprenticeship courses
that allow aspiring apprentices to 'taste'
the industry as well as gain valuable
knowledge of tools, techniques, and
occupational health and safety.
Many employers now expect
apprentices to have completed a pre-
apprenticeship course before
commencing employment. Courses
normally take six months to complete. Be
aware that the traditional trades fill up
quickly, with many students missing out
on a place. Consider asking your local
TAFE which industries are currently
demanding apprentices and investigate if
those occupations interest you. By
undertaking a less common pre-
apprenticeship course, you may have a
job offer directly at the end of the course.
Working environment: Consider what
kind of environment you'll be working in.
You may be outside often, in roof
cavities, on rooftops or under houses.
Maybe you will travel around the city
or stay in one location. Most often you
will need to be physically fit to lift heavy
materials and complete vigorous
activities. Work out what you're
prepared to do and what you want to
Women in trades
These days, it is not uncommon to find
women in trades. Most workplaces value
women working in these areas as they
are enthusiastic and committed to their
When applying for an apprenticeship,
make sure you feel comfortable with
your employer, your colleagues and the
work you will be doing. Larger
organisations are often a good place to
start because they have formal
arrangements for supporting women in
Apprenticeships are a valuable
alternative to full time study because you
are able to earn a wage during your
training. Your salary will increase each
year as you gain experience and training.
Fully qualified tradespersons who excel in
their work can earn as much as a doctor.
Talk to your careers adviser about the
above considerations, what type of
apprenticeship would suit you and what's
available. Careers advisers are often sent
information about upcoming
opportunities so it's worth finding out
what's in demand in addition to pursuing
your dream industry.
Ask your adviser to check your resume
and cover letter to ensure you are
putting your best foot forward. After all,
your application is the employer's first
impression of you.
