Carving a career
Brad Drury with his cutting-edge technology.
Nine years ago, Brad Drury, armed
with a decade of laser cutting
experience and several
Swinburne diplomas, set up in business.
Today, his company New Touch Laser
Cutting in Bayswater employs over 40
people and has loyal customers nation-
Mr Drury knew about laser cutting,
and he also understood the business,
but starting up a new enterprise is
always a risk.
''Specially with the cost of the
machines, they are worth a million
bucks each and I was only 25,'' he says.
''It was a big call, but I had the
confidence that I had the customer base
and knew what I was doing.''
To round off the New Touch service,
Mr Drury has recently opened a metal
fabrication shop in Clayton.
Laser cutting, a comparatively recent
technique, has many applications, Mr
Drury explains. ''We do work for
everyone --- engineering,
manufacturing, sheet metal, defence,
signage, automotive, fuel tanks,
furniture, brackets and lights. You make
it, we'll laser cut it.''
Versatility and professionalism
underpin the success of New Touch, he
says. ''It's predominantly quality and
service, but also the niches. We have
seven machines while our competitors
only have one or two, so we have the
capacity to take on big jobs and every
machine has it's own niche. We can do
rotary laser cutting, which is pipework,
and three dimensional laser cutting.
''We can go thicker, quicker and
larger than most of our competitors, up
to 20 millimetres in stainless and mild
steel. We can do laser engraving and we
also have the metal fabrication
company so if people want we can cut,
fold, weld and supply them with a
A successful enterprise needs the
right people and Mr Drury knows the
qualities to look for. ''The right
attitude,'' he says. ''It depends on the
role, but in most cases a history of
achievement, initiative, and get-up-
and-go. With machine operators, we
want some technical background, not
necessarily laser experience, but some
sort of machine experience in the metal
Operating laser cutting machines
takes a fair bit of knowledge, Mr Drury
says. ''We do a lot of in-house training,
we have guys who have been here for
seven or eight years and are still
learning. It's an evolving process, you
are always learning in the laser
The cutting machines are
programmed using CAD based
software. ''We have five full-time
programmers. You need to be very
fluent in AutoCAD and we give in-
house training on the numerical control
side of things.''
There is great satisfaction to be had
in running your own business. Mr Drury
finds his reward in offering his staff a
good place to work, and in knowing
that his customers want to keep coming
back. ''I love people saying, 'you guys
did a fabulous job'.
''We've gone from a one-man shop to
40-odd people in nine years, so I would
like to continue expansion at a
sustainable rate. I'm not going to
expand for the sake of it, there needs to
be a reason for it, not just ego. By
delivering quality and service we will
create the demand.''
