Home' Employment Forecast : October 2009 Contents 19
The Age Employment Forecast
The Government Sector has been the standout performer with the economic contribution of this sector increasing by 6.1% in
the June 09 quarter compared with the same quarter last year. This compares to GDP increasing by 0.3% (trend data) over the
same period. Clearly, the pump priming of the various Governments is having a positive impact. The pump priming, especially the
Federal Governments’, is also stimulating Public Sector jobs growth, even during the GFC. The Federal Government has added
numbers in response to increases in Government spending. This time around though, State Governments are also increasing
numbers with jobs up 8.0% (YTD August 09). Generally, this has been a good time for the Public Sector to recruit as employees
have sought the job security this sector offers. Defence, which had been growing strongly, is showing signs of levelling, with job
numbers fat in 2009.
The Victorian Government has also been supporting the economy as well and is increasing employment. Jobs are up over 10%.
Local Government positions have been a little weaker, although this is after very strong growth.
As the economy recovers and concerns about the budget defcits start to loom even larger, employment numbers are expected
to stay fairly static as Government (especially State Governments) deal with the defcits. Jobs are forecast to increase by 0.4% in
the May 2010 quarter.
